Creating a safe and enjoyable training environment is our primary goal. It takes the contributions of everyone in our community to make that happen. Here are a few ground rules to help foster a safe and fun experience for all.
Jiu Jitsu is an art that is practiced closely with your training partners. Please ensure that your clothes, body and breath are clean and free from unpleasant odors.
Please only wear simple, smooth attire. This means no zips, buttons, grommets, ornaments, metal-tipped drawstrings, or any other hardware or accessories that could hurt you or you training partner.
Kindly remove all watches, jewellery and piercings that could scratch you or your training partner.
Jiu Jitsu is practiced barefoot. Please no shoes on the mat at any time.
Everyone who wants to participate in our community must treat each other with respect and courtesy. We reserve the right to remove any person from the class we feel is engaging in harassing, discriminatory or intimidating behaviour, or otherwise causing a disruption to the class. In short, please be nice.
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a submission-based martial art and combat sport. Its central focus is the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling their movement, and using technique to try to submit them. It's also fun, exhilarating and addictively challenging for those who practice.
Do I need any experience?
No former experience is necessary, and people can enjoy learning BJJ from any starting point or level of fitness. In our class, we train as a team and encourage all our students to help each other and improve together.
Do I need to be in shape to start?
There is absolutely no experience or fitness background required for starting Jiu Jitsu with us. The class is designed to encourage and welcome people into this great martial art. If it gets too intense for where you are at the moment, you can take breaks as needed during the class. Plus, if you stick with it, your fitness will rapidly improve.
What equipment will I need?
In Jiu Jitsu, our bodies are the training equipment. All you need to start is an open mind and comfortable workout attire with no zips, buttons, or hardware. As you progress, a mouth guard is recommended as a safety precaution. If you are interested, we can recommend some more grappling specific attire.
